Help Your Lions Climb Higher On Giving Day!

Dear Columbia Men’s Lacrosse alumni and friends,

As we approach our first fall ball game, we want to provide you with an update on the team and what to look forward to for this upcoming season. As you might have heard, we are joining the MCLA Continental Lacrosse Conference Division 2 this spring (check out the recent Spec article linked below). Columbia’s ascendance to the MCLA has been the topic of years of discussion and we now believe the timing is ripe for the club to take the next step toward the Ivy League.

Our fall schedule is October 25th at Stony Brook, November 8th at home vs Hofstra, and November 22nd vs NYU on Randall’s Island. Our spring schedule will be released soon, but a few of the premier games include February 21st vs William and Mary (the game will be played at Temple), February 22nd home vs Temple (MCLA D1), and April 18th at URI (defending CLC D2 champions), along with games against the other Ivy club teams on February 28th, March 28th, and April 19th.

As Columbia Giving Day is approaching, we would also like to ask you for your financial support. As you all know, club sports don’t exist without the generous support of alumni, friends, and families of the team. This year, we requested $35,450 from Columbia but only received $8,391. Here’s a breakdown of our expenses for this school year:

  • Referees for 6 home and neutral-site games: $3,600 (3 referees and $200 per game)

  • Total pay for coaches: $5,985 (3 coaches and $18 per hour)

  • Photgrapher: $900 ($90 per game)

  • 12-person rental vans for away and neutral-site games: $5,568 ($192 per van per day)

  • Overnight hotel in Weymouth, MA, for MCLA Conference Playoffs: $1,668 ($139 per room)

  • White lacrosse balls: $148 (120 balls)

  • MCLA required game neon lacrosse balls: $320 (100 balls)

  • MCLA required shot clocks for home games: $2,948

    • The Club Sports Department and Baker Facilities have denied our request to use the shot clocks that are currently at Kraft Field even if we paid one of their staff members to operate them.

  • Reversible Nike jerseys: $3,060 ($90 per jersey)

  • Apex Security fee for home games: $2,240 ($560 per home game)

  • Background checks for coaches and drivers: $335

  • MCLA conference dues: $2,500

  • MCLA national dues: $2,000

  • Heritage Trophy entry fee: $300

  • Ivy club round robin field and referees: $600

Overall, our goal is to raise $22,000 to cover the distance between team dues and our allocation from Columbia. We will make everyone proud this year and represent ourselves well in the spotlight. We’re also working on livestreaming our home games in the spring. Some of the other MCLA teams livestream their home games, so we can share those with you when we travel too.
