Lions Beat CCNY and Marist at Heritage Trophy!

Dear Columbia Men’s Lacrosse alumni and friends,

Thank you again for your support of our team! Your Lions played four games on Randall’s Island last Saturday against some ancient rivals and walked away with two significant victories!  The tournament opened against City College with an avalanche of Light Blue goals.  Midfielder Jonny Bradbury '26 led a balanced Lions offense with three goals in a 15-1 rout.  The win extended a 20-year winning streak against City dating to the Beavers’ return to the field as a club lacrosse team in 2005.

The Light Blue next took on Ivy rival Yale in a hard-fought contest.  After Yale grabbed an early 3-0 lead the Lions had the bulk of possession and forced more than a dozen saves from the Bulldog goaltender.  Trailing 6-3 with three minutes to play the Lions struck for goals twice in just over a minute after drawing consecutive Yale penalties.  After winning the faceoff a potential game-tying shot just missed the left post and Yale maintained possession off the ensuing restart to run out the clock.

After a break the Lions faced the nationally-ranked Marist Red Foxes, who had swept their first three games and were looking to clinch the Heritage Trophy with a fourth win.  The Lions had other ideas however! Goaltender Kyle Cash ‘25 was the star in this one, allowing only one goal in the first half while making eight saves to keep the Lions down only 1-0. After a cross-checking penalty put Marist a man down for two minutes the offense capitalized, scoring two goals on the man-up and two more immediately after for a 4-1 lead! Marist would cut the deficit to one midway through the second half before Cash made the last three of his 14 saves in the game to slam the door! The Lions closed out the win with two more goals in the final minutes for a 6-3 win over the 14th-ranked team in the National College Lacrosse League!

The tournament finale featured the first contest between Columbia and Harvard since 1910, when the Crimson edged the Light Blue 3-2 in the last game Columbia played as a varsity lacrosse team before disbanding the next year.  Harvard raced out to a 3-0 lead and then traded goals with the Lions from there, eventually winning the game 9-5 and leaving Marist as the inaugural Heritage Trophy champion.  Afterward the Crimson and Light Blue gathered for a photo 115 years in the making!

Your Lions are now 3-3 on the season and have at least three more games left before the 2025 season concludes!  Southern Connecticut State comes to Baker Field for the Lions’ last home game of the season on Friday, April 11 before the team travels to Connecticut to defend its title in the 2025 Ivy Club Lacrosse Championship presented by Make It 8!  Photos and video from the Heritage Trophy and all upcoming club games will continue to be posted on our Instagram account: www.instagram.com/makeit8lax .
